Abstract

This study delves into the portrayal of female characters in the works of three prominent Indian authors—Mulk Raj Anand, Shashi Deshpande, and Meena Kandasamy—with a focus on identifying and analyzing misogynistic elements. Through a detailed analysis of selected works from these authors, the research aims to highlight the nuanced ways in which misogyny is depicted and perpetuated in literature. Mulk Raj Anand, known for his social realism, often portrayed women in traditional roles, reflecting the prevalent societal norms of his time (Anand, 1935). Shashi Deshpande, on the other hand, is renowned for her exploration of women's issues and their quest for identity in modern India (Deshpande, 1980). Meena Kandasamy, a contemporary voice, often confronts societal norms and patriarchy head-on through her writing (Kandasamy, 2017). By examining the female characters and their treatment in these works, this study seeks to shed light on the deep-rooted misogyny present in Indian society and its reflection in literature. Through a comparative analysis of the three authors, this research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of misogyny in Indian literature and society. This analysis is crucial in fostering conversations and initiatives aimed at addressing and eliminating misogyny in all its forms
